To make the readers feel involved, imagery was used. There was a lot of descriptive language inside the book, and it was also extremely poetic. "Lonely old river" had also been another phrase used to explain the Virginia river. "Inside-out with joy" was one way Jessie Lou had described herself, allowing the readers to understand her emotions. The descriptive language used, helped to create a well written novel. To tell the story, Phoebe Stone uses descriptive language, imagery and colloquial language. 'Deep Down Popular' is set after school, as Jessie Lou is too shy ti talk to Conrad during school hours and only communicates with him after school, but she slowly grows confident throughout the book. The main theme of the story is not to judge people by the way they look, but by what they are on the inside. Soon Jessie Lou, Conrad and an annoying fourth grader, other wise known as Quentin form a friendship and are on a mission to save the Baileys Hardware store from closing. Conrad is the most popular boy in the town Virginia, where as Jessie Lou has part-time friends only, but when Conrad is forced to wear a metal leg brace, his popularity goes crossing. The book follows the story of Jessie Lou Ferguson, who is deeply in love with Conrad Parker Smith since grade two. The nonfiction novel, 'Deep Down Popular' by Phoebe Stone is an inspiration story.

Overall I enjoyed this light little tale. It's very clever and fun and Farmer Giles made me think of a hobbit, which is always a winner with me. This version that I read included the original way Tolkien told the story and then his fleshed out version that became the book so it was fascinating to see how the story evolved. It's such a delightful little tale and one that Tolkien originally told as a story to his children. I wasn't intending at all to read Farmer Giles of Ham this year but I saw it at the library and it was Tolkien so I had to grab it. I put some paper and pens on the table, and asked everyone to come up with anagrams and nicknames that could subsequently be used for the characters in the books. So that evening, I put up a board with all the main players on it, and a summary of their key attributes. I also knew that I wanted certain other characters from the myths to feature. I already knew that my sisters – all of them 21st century women – would be named after the mythological sisters of old, but there were some issues with the unfamiliar spellings and pronunciations for a modern-day audience. Soon after I’d had the inspiration to write a series of books based on the Seven Sisters star cluster, I sat down one night with my family. Many of the characters in the books are linked to the Seven Sisters story as told in Greek mythology, via their names, their physical attributes, their roles in the plot and their personalities. While it’s not necessary to have any knowledge of the stars or the myths to enjoy the books, there are plenty of hidden references to them if you’re interested and you know where to look. ‘The Seven Sisters’ series is loosely based on the ancient stories and myths surrounding the Seven Sisters of the famous Pleiades star cluster. Its name was unknown and would forever remain so. "A satirical spin on the end times- kind of like The Office meets The Leftovers." -Estelle Tang, Elle Maybe it's the end of the world, but not for Candace Chen, a millennial, first-generation American and office drone meandering her way into adulthood in Ling Ma's offbeat, wryly funny, apocalyptic satire, Severance.Ī stunning, audacious book with a fresh take on both office politics and what the apocalypse might bring. She's really tough and takes shit from nobody, but it's totally okay because she's also really funny. I think the author gets the balance just right with Alosa. I like it when supposedly cruel pirates (assassins, sorcerers, etc.) are not sugar-coated to make the audience like them more - Alosa has no problem slitting a few throats and getting her hands dirty, but I liked her just fine. The tone is often light and humourous - even sometimes reminding me of the hilarious My Lady Jane - but this doesn't stop Alosa from being a brutal badass. When her father sends her on a mission to find part of a map that will lead to a secret isle, Alosa must fake her own capture and pretend to be a prisoner as she hunts down the map piece on board a ship led by a ruthless young captain. But Alosa herself is a tough, no-nonsense pirate captain who can more than hold her own. Alosa is the daughter of Kalligan, who rules over and terrorizes the seas. This was a whole lot of fun for the most part! My few complaints are not really huge issues, but more "this could have been a lot better if." However, it was a decent debut and I'll be looking out for the next in the series (quick warning: the title of the sequel is kind of a spoiler for part of this book).ĭaughter of the Pirate King has a rather self-explanatory title.
